Chamber History

The SCCC (Ontario) Inc., originally called the Swiss Canadian Business Association, was founded in 1966 by a group of Swiss Canadian businessmen in Toronto with the active encouragement and support of then Consul General Georges Falquier. In the over 40 years since then the SCCC has grown into a respected organisation offering members a variety of events and benefits. The original "SCCC Bulletin" has grown into a bi-monthly, full-colour magazine called info suisse, jointly published with our sister organisation in Montreal. Regular luncheons or receptions, some organised with other local Business Organisations, are held with many featuring interesting guest speakers. In 1973 we organised our first annual black tie Dinner Dance which went on to become a beloved and enjoyable event as is the annual Golf Tournament which continues to be the highlight of the summer season.

The SCCC (Ontario) Inc. has also been very active in supporting and encouraging trade and investment between Canada and Switzerland. Very early on we lobbied hard and successfully to obtain landing rights at Toronto for SWISSAIR (the inaugural flight took place in the spring of 1973 and was celebrated at a sold out luncheon at the Granite Club, attended by then SWISSAIR President Dr. Haas). The Chamber was also involved with the drafting of the Double Taxation Treaty between Canada and Switzerland. To mark the 700th anniversary of Switzerland in 1991 the SCCC was heavily involved, along with OSEC, the Swiss Trade Development Organisation, in the setting up and running of the Swiss Pavillion at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) which was an outstanding success and attended by over 100,000 visitors. In addition the Chamber, in co-operation with the Consulate General, has over the years organised a number of seminars relating to Swiss Canadian trade and investment.

Last, but certainly not least, the SCCC in a modest way is encouraging the further development of young students. For this purpose the Swiss Canadian Scholarship Fund was set up about 10 years ago which provides stipends to deserving university students.

Membership in the SCCC (Ontario) Inc. is open to anybody interested in Swiss Canadian Trade, Investment and Commerce. For more information please contact us.
